Unshakable Faith: Lessons from Mark 6

Exploring the essence of faith through Jesus' teachings and our journeys.
In this week’s message, Charl Van Der Walt delves into the profound theme of Unshakable Faith, as he continues the Red Letter Revival series. Drawing from Mark 6 and other scriptures, Charl invites us to examine what it means to truly place our faith in Jesus, especially when faced with doubt and skepticism.
Faith in Familiarity
Charl begins by recounting the reception of Jesus in his hometown. Initially welcomed with amazement, the townspeople quickly shift to skepticism. They question,
"Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son?"
This moment highlights how familiarity can breed contempt, causing us to overlook the miraculous in our midst. Their doubt, rooted in their perception of Jesus as just an ordinary man, serves as a warning about how we might rationalise away the divine workings in our lives.
The Power of Belief
Charl emphasises the connection between faith and miracles. He points out that the townspeople’s lack of faith hindered them from experiencing Jesus' miracles. In contrast, the faith of Jairus and the woman with the issue of blood opened the door to healing and transformation.
He reflects on Jesus’ words:
> "A prophet is not without honour, except in his own town."
This illustrates the barrier that doubt can create, preventing us from receiving what God has in store for us.
Sending Out the Disciples
As the message unfolds, Charl discusses Jesus’ commissioning of his disciples. He instructs them to travel light, relying on their faith and the authority given to them. This act of sending them out two by two not only builds their faith but also prepares them for the challenges they will face.
Charl highlights the necessity of faith in their mission, underscoring that
"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves."
This duality of wisdom and purity is essential for their journey ahead.
The Journey of Discipleship
One of the most poignant reflections is on the nature of discipleship. Charl reminds us that following Jesus is a daily commitment, filled with waiting, listening, and growing.
"It’s a steady journey, it’s a day-by-day journey."
He stresses that patience is crucial in our faith journey, allowing God’s plans to unfold in His perfect timing.
The Hall of Faith
To conclude, Charl references Hebrews 11, known as the Hall of Faith, to illustrate how faith connects us to God’s story. Each example serves as a testament to the power of belief and the rewards of seeking God earnestly.
In reflecting on this message, we are reminded that our faith may be small, like a mustard seed, but when planted in good soil, it can grow into something transformative. The journey requires commitment and an openness to God’s timing and plans.
As we continue our walk of faith, let’s hold on to the promise that with every step, we are part of something greater — God’s unfolding story in our lives.
